Ensiling Reduces Seed Viability: Implications for Weed Management

چکیده
Ensiling, a lactic acid fermentation process, is mainly used to preserve biomass. In addition, it has been shown affect seed viability of some plant species. The extent which this makes ensiling suitable as weed control measure, however, not yet determined. Both the range controllable species and parameters an process that safely kills seeds are still undefined. We aimed determine effect varying substrate conditions on 10 selected represent wide different traits. Five types silages were made from maize or mixtures wildflower biomass ensiled in lab-scale silos for 8 months. pure prepared under either ideal suboptimal forage. Seeds important weeds ( Chenopodium album, Abutilon theophrasti ) mixture biogas production Cichorium intybus, Daucus carota, Echium vulgare, Malva alcea, sylvestris, Melilotus albus, officinalis tested. Seed was determined using combination tetrazolium germination tests. Ensiling reduced across all significantly. Seed-killing efficacies ensiling, differed widely among studied, largely related whether could produce hard (physically dormant) seeds. without hardseededness completely inactivated by while seed-killing hardseeded ranged 5 60%. Variation had no consistent survival. concluded potential sustainably reduce therefore should be adopted component integrated management organic agriculture.

Weed seed viability in composted beef cattle feedlot manure.
Manure composting has gained increased acceptance by the beef cattle (Bos taurus) feedlot industry in southern Alberta, Canada. Unlike fresh manure, compost is often promoted as being "weed-free." Studies were conducted with five weed species in 1997 and thirteen in 1999 to examine the effect of feedlot manure composting on weed seed viability. Weed seeds were buried in open-air compost windrow...
متن کاملSeed-Mediated Gene Flow Promotes Genetic Diversity of Weedy Rice within Populations: Implications for Weed Management
Increased infestation of weedy rice-a noxious agricultural pest has caused significant reduction of grain yield of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) worldwide. Knowledge on genetic diversity and structure of weedy rice populations will facilitate the design of effective methods to control this weed by tracing its origins and dispersal patterns in a given region. To generate such knowledge, we stud...
متن کاملSoftware Tools for Weed Seed Germination Modeling
The next generation of weed seed germination models will need to account for variable soil microclimate conditions. To predict this microclimate environment we have developed a suite of individual tools (models) that can be used in conjunction with the next generation of weed seed germination models. The three tools that will be outlined here are GlobalTempSIM, GlobalRainSIM, and the soil tempe...

Discussed in this Brief: The National Evaluation of Operation Weed and Seed, a strategy to control violent crime, drug trafficking, and drug-related crime in targeted areas and to provide a safe environment for residents to live, work, and raise their families. From the initial three grant sites in 1991, Weed and Seed has grown to include 200 sites nationwide. The Weed and Seed programs in eigh...
